The Technology That Keeps Help Close at Bancroft
The central nurse call display — continuous oversight, reading “0 Live Calls”.
Earlier in this series we looked at the in-room nurse call point — the button a person reaches for when they need help. This piece looks at the other end of that connection: the central display that makes sure every call is seen, answered and accounted for. Together they form a single system, and it is worth understanding how the technology behind the scenes supports safe, responsive care.
The wall-mounted touchscreen pictured is the hub of Bancroft’s nurse call system, supplied by Courtney Thorne, a long-established provider of nurse call technology for health and social care. Where the in-room call point is what a resident sees, this display is what the staff team relies on.
It shows, in real time, the status of the whole service — here reading “0 Live Calls”, meaning every request for assistance has been answered and nothing is outstanding.
That simple line of text represents something important: continuous oversight. At any moment, staff can see whether anyone is calling for help, where the call is coming from, and how long it has been waiting. Nothing depends on someone happening to be in the right place at the right time.
The system is wireless and networked, with connectivity shown clearly on screen, allowing call points throughout the building to communicate with the central display and with staff wherever they are.
A modern system like this is designed to run continuously and reliably, with the resilience expected of safety-critical equipment. The on-screen software version and timestamp reflect a maintained, up-to-date system rather than a static installation — important assurance that the technology people depend on is kept current.
A digital nurse call system does more than connect a call to a carer. It creates an invaluable operational standard framework for the home:
Like every other fitting in this series, the display is designed to sit quietly within the environment. Mounted neatly against a neutral wall in a staff area, it does its work without dominating the space or making the building feel clinical for the people who live there. The technology is powerful but unobtrusive — present for the staff who rely on it, and reassuring rather than intrusive for the people it protects.
A nurse call display is easy to overlook, but it embodies a promise that runs through everything at Bancroft: that help is always within reach, and that no call goes unheard.
In a service providing hospital-equivalent care within a homely setting, technology like this is part of the care model — combining the responsiveness of a clinical environment with the calm of a home, and giving both residents and staff the confidence that support is always close at hand.
That is the standard we hold across every system, every fitting, and every detail of life at Bancroft.
